Every now and then, one may need a little help when are feeling stuck or low. Oracle cards are a great way to get a little pick-me-up when things aren't going right.

Oracle cards can be a great divination tool when one is looking for an answer to a difficult question, or simply needs some positive reinforcement when things are looking bleak.

What Are Oracle Cards?

The concept of oracle cards is similar to that of traditional Tarot cards. They are cards that are meant to provide the user with insight and guidance, usually from a higher source. This is often referred to as the higher self, a higher power or the Divine.

Oracle cards differ from Tarot cards in that they are not divided into suits or Major and Minor Arcana (the term "arcana" means secrets, so the Major Arcana are the “big secrets,” while the Minor Arcana are “little secrets.”)

What Types of Oracle Cards Are There?

There are many different types of oracle card decks out there to choose from, but the most common theme in all of them is that they promote positive thinking. This is another way in which oracle cards differ from Tarot – while Tarot cards can be negative (such as Death, the Devil, etc…), oracle cards are mainly about positivity.

Some different types of oracle cards one might find are those containing goddesses, angels, faeries, mermaids, unicorns, and other metaphysical beings. Oracle cards vary in the number of cards in a deck – there can be as little as 20 or more than 100. There are decks specific to questions about love, connecting with spirit and guides and guardian angels, achieving goals, and more.

Using Oracle Cards to Promote Positive Thinking

Many oracle cards have a brief affirmation either directly on the card, or in the guidebook that comes with the deck. These affirmations are meant to reinforce positive thinking in the user’s mind. There are a couple of ways the user might choose to use these affirmations in order to maintain positive thoughts.

One way a user might choose to use the oracle cards is to choose one card every morning. The user would shuffle the deck, and ask something like “What do I need to know today?” He or she would then choose a card from the deck, read the affirmation, and then repeat it throughout the day as a reminder of what they need to focus upon.

Using Oracle Cards to Answer Questions

Another way oracle cards can be used is the same way as a Tarot card, where the user asks a question and picks a card. If, for example, the question is “Am I making the right decision?” and the card pulled is something like “You know what to do. Trust your inner wisdom." Then, the user would take this as a sign that they have, in fact, made the right decision.

Oracle cards can be very useful for providing guidance, and can certainly be consulted daily if the user so chooses, but they are meant to offer some guidelines, not to dictate how one should live their life. That decision can only come from within, but in the meantime, a little divine help can't hurt.
