Interpreting the Court Cards in a tarot deck can be confusing. Understanding how each tarot queen reflects the energies of her suit can help one understand her messages.

Do you get flummoxed when one of the four queens turns up in a tarot reading? Do you find yourself scrambling for your LWB (little white book) to help you figure out who each queen represents?

The ladies of the tarot card deck's minor arcana really aren't that difficult to understand if you take their suit's meanings into account. There are a number of things to consider when you come face to face with a queen, but if you take the time to get to know each of them a bit, you'll find interpreting them in position will be a far easier task.

What the Queens Mean in Tarot

One of the difficulties in reading queens in a tarot reading is the number of ways in which they can be interpreted. Like any other tarot court card, a tarot queen can represent:

  • An actual person in the life of the querent;
  • A past, present or future event; or
  • An aspect of the querent's personality.

Often, tarot readers fall into a habit of favoring one of those three options over the others, which can easily lead to misinterpretations. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to determine which of the three interpretations is the right one. Rather, the best way to find which is the proper reading is to take into account the surrounding cards and to let the querent in on the interpretation.

Very often, when you take the time to describe the particular Queen to the questioner, he or she will light up with recognition and supply the pieces that you need to put the lady into her proper place. To help focus your attentions — and those of the questioner — on the meaning of the particular queen you might ask one or more of the following questions:

  • Is there an important person in your life who looks like this queen?
  • Do you know someone with these qualities in your life?
  • Do you have the qualities of this queen, or would they be helpful to you in your present situation?

The answers to these questions can help you form a framework for interpreting the message of the queen in any particular tarot reading.
